The soft hyphen (­) and cross browser compatibility

The soft hyphen supposedly allows you to specify a place in a word where a logical break could go in case it would be preferable for the word to wrap. A hyphen should appear mid word only if the word wraps. (- or perhaps should it be there in the very beginning?!)
